School Support: Helping Schools Navigate Childhood Cancer
At Bemorefab Children’s Cancer Charity, we understand that when a child in your school is diagnosed with cancer, it can be an overwhelming and sensitive situation for staff, students, and the wider school community. That’s why we are here to support schools every step of the way, ensuring that everyone feels informed, confident, and equipped to help the child and their family.

How We Can Support Schools
1. Talking to Peers About Cancer
We know that talking about cancer can feel scary for teachers and staff. Often, other children will have overheard whispers or picked up on changes and will have questions.
We take that burden away from teachers by coming into the school to explain cancer to the child’s peers in a way that is:
🧡 Child-Friendly – We use pictures, stories, video clips, and even toys and teddies to make sure the information is engaging, clear, and age-appropriate.
🧡 Reassuring – Our approach ensures that children understand what’s happening without fear, and that they feel empowered to support their classmate.
🧡 Open & Honest – We answer common questions in a way that is easy to understand, helping to prevent rumors or misconceptions.
2. Supporting Staff
We also provide staff training sessions to help teachers and school staff understand what to expect when a child returns to school after cancer treatment.
These sessions include:
✅ What to expect from the child – Understanding their physical and emotional needs when returning to school.
✅ How to best support the family – Creating a compassionate, flexible, and understanding learning environment.
✅ Practical strategies – How to adjust workloads, offer emotional support, and handle conversations about cancer in the classroom.
3. Helping Communicate with Families
We understand that a cancer diagnosis doesn’t just affect one child—it can impact their entire school community. To help schools navigate this, we can assist with letter writing to other families within the school, ensuring that:
✉️ Parents are informed in a sensitive and appropriate way.
✉️ The school can explain any important health considerations, such as if the child is immunocompromised and may need extra precautions.
✉️ Families feel included and reassured, reducing fear and confusion among other parents and children.
4. Educational Support for the Child
Alongside emotional and social support, we also help schools ensure that the child’s education continues as smoothly as possible. Whether they need home tuition, virtual learning, or adapted in-school support, we can help schools understand what resources and entitlements are available to them.
We Are Here to Help
A cancer diagnosis doesn’t just affect the child—it impacts their friends, classmates, teachers, and school staff too. By providing the right support, we ensure that the child feels included, understood, and supported when they are ready to return.
